Totally agree. I think the lack of certainty/lack of feasible planning in previous years meant we never explored this option to the extent Wigan do- with much success.
In the case of Wigan-Widnes: Widnes were happy to take the players & happy to accept the informal "feeder team" tag that comes with it (in some peoples eyes).
Half our problem IMO is that the rivalry with smaller clubs in our immediate area (i.e Fev) mean that the idea of "playing to our fiddle" would never sit right & would be very unpopular with fans, even if we were providing a high quality of player for the championship. Wigans only problem now is finding a suitable replacement club for the promoted Widnes.
Batley may be far enough removed from our locality to work.
If we live in a franchise age this is the way to go. I know it doesn't sit well with many British sporting traditions (P&R) but it works in Australia (NSW cup to NRL), you just have to look at not only the level of quality the system produces but also the depth of this quality to know the system works- for them anyway. But if we live in a franchise age how long before it is imported over here?
