Surprised (only mildly!) that in light of all this idiocy in pansyball over Januzaj playing for England, that rugby has not been brought up.

As the World has got smaller, concepts of nationality are becoming more fluid. A fair few countries have emerged or disappeared in our lifetime too. RL adopts the approach it does out of necessity, but it is the way things are heading, I reckon. You only have to look at Tongan-born Lesley Vainikolo playing League for New Zealand and Union for England. Kevin Pietersen, John Barnes, Mo Farrar and so on.

Di Stefano played for Argentina, Colombia and Spain, Kubala for Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Spain (plus Catalonia), so it's not even all that new.

Poor Januzaj scores a couple of goals says nothing about international football. Being the off spring of Kosovan refugees and consequently his relatives have suffered whilst every twit destroys the land they are on claiming it as there own he should have some concerns on the concept of nationalism. They then flee the place and no one wants to know them and there's outrage because some twit on match of the day suggests he could be eligible for England. How has he become the focal point for a debate on national identity.



I don't get nationalism. Destructive idea. That said international rugby of both codes is a joke as you can play for different countries even after having played for one. You should pick a country your eligible for and not be allowed to play for anyone else.

I agree with that - with allowances made for countries that disappear. A few did the USSR-CIS-Russia/Ukraine etc thing (same with Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia), through no fault of their own.

If your country splits as in Czechoslovakia and the Former Yugoslavia you should be able to play for both/all, but only in a disguise.

A tache when playing for Czechoslovakia and no tache for Yugoslavia should do for an adequate disguise.

My actual point was that last year he apparently distanced himself from ever representing England, stating the pride/not being born in Eng - Aus routes etc. He's now suddenly Scottish 'again'. Indeed, according to a poster who spoke to him directly last year, he would never represent Scotland either. Hum.
