| After reading all the pros and cons on this thread,my own personal opinion is Long should call it a day.Nobody is a bigger fan of him than me,he has obviously given his all at Saints, and now his body is paying the price.I put elsewhere,it has been a hugh disappointment to me that it has not worked out for him at Hull.Whatever he does next, nobody can deny in his prime he was class.

If he signs another 2 year deal at Widnes who are interested him it could tarnish his reputation and he will just be known as a guy who didn't know when to hang up his boots.

You are correct, and that would be a sad end to a great player.I truly hope he calls it a day.

| We should keep Obst.Look at Hudds now, they have lost Brough for 8 weeks, and Grix is injured,so plenty of cover in the pivots is a must.Lucky for them they have plenty of options,so it won't do us any harm, doing the same.

| Quote Mild Rover="Mild Rover"If Ellis won't be ready next season, when he'll be 22, then I think he's a poor signing. People learn best in different ways (watching, listening, doing), but he'll likely learn a lot more playing than being mentored (even by a modern great) - IMO.
Give him a little bit of patience and he could really blossom - especially relative to the rest in SL, as the old guard retire and those in their prime look at big money in the NRL.'"
I think we have little choice but to throw Ellis in at the deep end and start him at 7 next season. IIRC Danny Brough was a similar age when we signed him and Dobson was even younger when he started playing first grade in SL?

| the thing with ellis yes he will be 22 but hasnt played super league apart from 2 games a couple of years ago and to be expected to lead us around might not work out great give him a year where he can back up both halfback spots and get a good feel to where he needs to be at super league level, id be dissapointed if we go into the new season with ellis as starting 7

| Pay Long off now. The pay off to be minimal in return for a contract next season with a coaching element in it essentially using him as cover/mentor. Get Ellis in now using the space on the cap created by paying Long off. This season has gone to all intents and purposes and having Ellis in won't make us any worse whether he's ready or not. We may learn something and we may even be pleasantly surprised. Longy says he owes the fans and there were indications from Murdoch on RH that he knows he can't demand big money so if he's being honest maybe he'd go along with it.

Let's give him a go.
I'm sick of us signing/developing young players and not playing them.

but to go into next season expecting ellis to be our 7 and lead us around the park could go either way but for me i would be looking at a player like jeff robson whos looking for a move over here with ellis backing up both halfs so any injury or loss of form he comes straight in. ideally it would be great to get ellis now and see if hes ready or not but could be dangerous expecting him to lead this club around the park
