It's a totally negative tactic that devalues the battle for field position. Any donkey can hammer a ball dead and it can often make up for the team not having much of a pack.

Within the the 20 restart on 20, everywhere else restarts at the point of the kick. Simple

Difference is that the union in goal areas are much bigger. Most SL grounds are only 5 deep and the majority of kicks only just run dead.

Kick returns are one of the more exciting plays we have in the game, I don't like the idea of hammering the ball dead with absolutely no chance of returning it to in order to negate players with the abilities of Sam Tomkins or Billy Slater.

I think something has to be done. Its an easy get out for sides and a restart at the 40 would change the attitude towards using such tactics.

Also, i'd just like to point out, the reason Tommy's kicks go out dead is because he can be a poor kicker of the ball.

I agree with the out-and-out kicks for dead. But what would you do with the sort of kick often made by the likes of Danny Brough or Lee Briers where they attempt to have the ball stop just short of or in the try box only for it to dribble the last few inches and end up over the line? This type of kick, with the aim to build pressure, is entirely meritorious and when they come off can lead to exciting rugby. Players may not risk these if the penalty for failure were loss of territory, then they'd all go back to playing it safe and kicking for touch - a standard Union tactic.

Some full backs are happy to just let the ball run dead even if they can make a play at it, what would happen then?

Leeds and especially Kevin Sinfield have done this for years. I didn't like it then and don't like it now. Think a 40 metre restart would be too harsh. Ball back to where kicked would seem a fair compromise.

Pro's and cons all round for this but I agree it is easy to get out of trouble if you have a kicker that can just hoof it dead. A penalty on the 20 would be pointless because you can already kick for touch from the restart just has to bounce before going dead.



I think the restart on the 40 would be a good way to stop it happening so often and hopefully improve the standard of kicks. I would only do this though if the kick was made from within your own half.



Still too many rules being changed/manipulated when our game is good enough as it is. Would be nice if coaches and players alike would stop trying to find shortcuts and appreciate the game as it is supposed to be played.

Simple solution.



Within 20m from opposition line - 20m restart

Within 50m to 20m from opposition line - 30m restart

Own half - 40m restart.
