Was gonna say Mick. Otherwise, my memories are of Ian Gildart. Used to average around 40 tackles a game. Bloody useless running at the line though! 
Steele Retchless though was the one player I can remember from modern times for being truly renowned for his work in defence. |

Funny you mention that - I played a few times against Denis Betts and Ian Gildart when they played together at u15's & u17's - Gildart was the star of the show and was touted as the next big thing... then when they turned pro, he lost his running game completely and the coaches turned him into a workhorse
Betts of course went on to GB honours and NRL
